Me Mom and Morgentaler

GAMIQ 2007 Tribute award given to Me Mom and Morgentaler

Me Mom and Morgentaler was formed in 1988 for a Marianopolis CEGEP talent show. After two short years, they rose to become an international phenomenon: a veritable touring ska circus. The founding members were Gus Van Go (guitars, vocals), Kim Bingham (vocals), Matt Lipscombe (bass), Sid Zanforlin (drums), John Britton (percussion), John Jordan (saxophones), Adam «Bix» Berger (trumpet) and Kasia Hering (accordion) – who was later to be replaced by Noah Green. They began their adventure at such Montreal venues as Les Foufounes Électriques, the Spectrum and the Métropolis. They took the show on the road across Canada and the United States, sharing the stage with such luminaries as The English Beat, The Special, Bad Manners, No Doubt, Public Image Limited and The Violent Femmes – all of this without a record label.

Me Mom and Morgentaler had a huge influence on the Canadian ska music scene. However, they will mostly be remembered for their circus-like shows involving fire-breathers, pyrotechnics, chain saws, giant penis piñatas, spaceships for crowd surfing, etc. They will also be recognized for unifying Montreal’s anglophone and francophone music scenes. They sang in French and English and even occasionally in Spanish. They played in every possible venue in Montreal, on both sides of Saint-Laurent boulevard – Montreal’s imaginary linguistic border. The town’s multiculturalism and ethnicity was clearly reflected in this avant-garde band that mixed ska, rock, jazz, swing and latin music.

Me Mom and Morgentaler disbanded in 1995, leaving behind 1 EP (Clown Heaven & Hell) and 2 full-length albums (Shiva Space Machine and We Are Revolting). The group reunited for a fabulous show at the 1999 Montreal International Jazz Festival.

GAMIQ 2008 Tribute award http://www.gamiq.ca/eng/?p=30 http://www.gamiq.ca/eng/?p=30#comments Wed, 05 Sep 2007 15:34:05 +0000 http://www.gamiq.ca/eng/?p=30

The GAMIQ Awards is proud to present their tribute award this year to Paul Gott, singer for the punk band The Ripcordz.

Paul Gott has been the singer of The Ripcordz since the band was formed in 1980. In true DIY spirit, he founded Rear Guard in the mid-80s, the biggest fanzine of the scene at that time, and his own company, EnGuard Records, which released more than 40 albums by Canadians artists. He was also one of the founders of the Montreal Mirror, serving as the first music editor of the weekly paper, and he also managed CRSG, Concordia’s college radio station. Paul Gott strongly contributed to the Montreal music scene by promoting many shows and festivals. The Ripcordz played more than 2000 shows, only in Canada, and shared the stage with UK Subs, Rancid, Soundgarden, Nirvana and The Misfits. The band is actually currently working on their 12th album.

The GAMIQ tribute award was previously presented to Me Mom and Morgentaler (2007) and Voïvod guitarist, Denis «Piggy» D’Amour (2006).
